Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site prior to the proposed conversion of the crypt of St Dunstan in the West church into a public house. The research undertaken suggested that the site had a low potential for the prehistoric periods. The site's archaeological potential for the Roman period was thought to be good. In particular, evidence of a Roman extra-mural cemetery and of land division and agrarian practices may be present. The site's archaeological potential for the Anglo-Saxon period was thought to be low. In particular there was no contemporary evidence to suggest the existence of a pre-conquest church. The site's archaeological potential for the medieval and post-medieval period was thought to be high beyond the area of the existing crypt, and low within the crypt. North and south of the existing church building, evidence of the medieval church of St Dunstan's in the West and its churchyard (including burials) may have been present. The impact of the existing buildings on any archaeological deposits which may have ocurred was likely to have been significant. In particular, archaeological remains of post-medieval date, and probable medieval date, may no longer exist within the crypt area. The proposed new groundworks within the crypt were likely to have little or extremely localised archaeological impact. Any new groundworks (if any) outside of this area, however, were likely to have a very severe archaeological impact. The report recommended further archaeological evaluation. [Au(adp)]
