Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed reopening of the island to visitors and included the conversion of several empty former military buildings into a hotel, an interpretation centre and a new visitor recreation centre. Drake's Island had a long period of military use in safeguarding the approaches to Plymouth, and later the naval dockyard, from the mid-16th century until the abandonment of the coastal defence system in 1958. There existed on the Island a considerable archaeological resource including defensive walls, gun batteries and emplacements, magazines and military buildings, reflecting this longevity of use. The island demonstrated a remarkable record of a major defensive fortification in numerous phases, but particularly of the 18th and 19th centuries. [Au(adp)] |
