Abstract: |
The investigation exposed two substantial ditches of late Iron Age to Roman date. The ditches evidently formed boundary and/or drainage features within an agricultural landscape. Botanical remains included a small assemblage of charred cereal grain and chaff, plus possible spelt wheat. The radiocarbon dating of the large southern ditch - 100 BC to AD 70- also supports the idea of continuous agricultural activity from the later prehistoric to Roman periods, as previously suggested from excavations on the site of the Villa. There was also some evidence for earlier prehistoric activity, in the form of a small assemblage of struck flints. Although residual, and only broadly datable to the Mesolithic or Bronze Age, this group was comparable with others that were recorded in the area. [Au(abr)] |
