Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of proposed housing development across the site which was the location of former MOD married quarters. Documentary sources and the results of geotechnical test pit reports were consulted. This established that a Mansion House, known as Carpenders Park, was in existence at the site from at least 1747 and outlined the mansions known history including phases of known rebuilding. The most recent rebuilding of this mansion was known to have been demolished in 1958 though the backfilled basements and main annexe block still survived. The report concluded that the development was unlikely to have a significant archaeological impact. The report recommended that work would require an archaeological watching brief in order to determine the presence or otherwise of structural elements or occupation deposits predating 1747, to what extent the buildings of 1747 were incorporated in the rebuilding of 1775-77 and to determine to what extent the buildings of 1775-77 were incorporated in the rebuilding of 1862-92.
