Abstract: |
Limited desk-based assessment and an evaluation were carried out in advance of the construction of a dwelling at a site within Weldon, a village which had been a significant iron-working centre from at east as early as the medieval period. Several iron-working sites had been recorded between 400m and 800m to the east of the proposal site. Stone quarrying had also been a major industry in the area; quarry earthworks lay c. 350m to the south-east of the site. A medieval manor house had lain 180m to the north, and numerous 16th-17th century buildings lay within the village. During the evaluation, no archaeological remains were revealed, although a few pieces of iron slag and 12th century pottery were found. These artefacts suggested that industrial activity and possible occupation of the medieval period may have been located nearby. [AIP] |
