Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the drilling of two series of boreholes and the excavation of three test pits and a 9.5m long trench. An earlier desk based assessment had identified the possible presence of one of the late 17th century windmills, which gave the river wall its name, Mill Wall. A concrete foundation was discovered and, below this, further silty clay layer, containing 18th and 19th century bricks. The watching brief revealed that the gravel rose slightly from the eastern side of the site towards the centre and then dropped down and levelled off.. The report recommended that no further archaeological work was necessary and that the archaeological condition relating to the planning consent be discharged. [AIP] |
