Abstract: |
The proposed development was to consist of an extension to the southern end of the existing building. The site was located in an area of archaeological and historical significance. The site itself lay within the Sites and Areas of High Archaeological Potential, as defined by Surrey County Council. There was a high potential for medieval and post-medieval remains, a moderate-high potential for prehistoric remains, and a low potential for Roman and Saxon remains. Cartographic evidence showed that the southern end and western area of the proposed development site were built on by the mid 19th century by the Wheatsheaf Brewery. The remainder of the site appeared not to have been built on during this period. It was likely therefore that archaeological horizons at the southern and western areas of the proposed development would have suffered some previous impact. [Au(abr)] |
