Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that five sites of potential archaeological interest lay within the proposal area. These comprised cropmarks which had been recorded as possible linear boundaries, pit alignments, a rectangular enclosure and a ring ditch. However, an aerial photographic assessment commissioned for the study reinterpreted some of the potential archaeological features as frost cracks in the underlying gravel. Other features were thought to have represented linear ditches of possible Iron Age or Romano-British date, a medieval agricultural landscape including the sub-surface remains of ridge and furrow, and various post-enclosure field boundaries. Recent evaluations and excavations in the vicinity of the site had revealed that cropmarks similar in form to those on the application site represented enclosure ditches, drainage ditches and ring ditches. It was concluded that the demonstrable archaeological potential of the site was such that the Local Planning Authority would be likely to request that a field evaluation be undertaken. [AIP] |
