Abstract: |
The report presents the findings of an extensive survey of Essex Poor Law buildings that were erected and utilised following the introduction in 1834 of the Poor Law Amendment Act. In 1995/6 the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England recognised the potential threat to these buildings and undertook a national assessment of the surviving resource. Similar concerns and the lack of comparative date culminated in a county-wide survey during 1997/8 which aimed to identify and prioritise these sites thereby assessing existing statutory designations and formulating a coherent long-term management strategy.
