Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed development of the site. The report showed that the site lay in an area of considerable archaeological potential of all periods from the Roman to the post-medieval. Previous archaeological work in the adjacent sites indicated that the site had a potential for the discovery of in-situ prehistoric remains. Archaeological remains from the Roman period had been found both on neighbouring sites and on the site itself. It was felt unlikely, givan the paucity of such remains elsewhere in the City, that early and mid-Saxon periods would be found on the site, however, there was a possiblility that late Saxon cut features may have been present. The ground reduction for the existing basement slabs would have removed all or most of any medieval and post-medieval horizontal stratigraphy, however, adjacent sites had indicated the possible survival of deeply cut features such as cellars, wall foundations, drains and pits. The report suggested that further archaeological evaluation work may be necessary to determine the exact nature and depth of such deposits. This evaluation could take place at the same time as future geotechnical investigations. [Au(adp)]
