Abstract: |
A series of watching brief were implemented during ground disturbance work within the grounds of Hexham Abbey. During programme (A) evidence of 19th century landscaping and ground disturbance was revealed. The top layer of a brick wall of unknown date was revealed but the work only partially uncovered it, no evidence of Roman occupation was found, nor pottery of any period. Nor were there any sealed medieval deposits. Programme (B) was located within St Wilfrid's Gate. Trenches were machine excavated to between 75mm and 250mm deep. Two yellow sandstone blocks were uncovered aligned with two of the internal buttresses of the gateway and a further block was recorded in section, presumably part of the gateway foundation. No pottery or other dating material was found. [Au(abr)] |
