Abstract:
Sheffield City Council had applied for planning permission to convert the ancillary buildings at Abbey Farm for residential use. The ancillary buildings and Abbey Farm were Grade II Listed Buildings and stood within the area around the Premonstratensian Abbey of Beaucheif designated as a SAM. The proposed development would involve substantial work to the existing buildings to convert them to residential use including the provision of services. In addition to this the proposed development would create car parking and garden areas adjacent to the buildings. Beaucheif was an area rich in medieval remains. The desk-based assessment showed that the proposed development area was archaeologically sensitive. It was very probable that the ancillary buildings of Abbey Farm and the farmyard area included within the proposed development area stood on the remains of monastic buildings related to the Inner Court and other parts of the Precinct area of Beaucheif Abbey. It was therefore highly likely that any disturbance below the surface material of the yard and paths and below the floor surface of the ancillary buildings would encounter medieval archaeological deposits. The proposed work to the structure of the ancillary buildings and the provision of services and landscaping activity in the surrounding area would affect the Scheduled Area. It was, however, recognised that the current condition of the buildings had a negative impact on the setting of the Abbey. [Au(abr)]
