Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in response to a planning condition upon residential redevelopment of the site. The evaluation involved the opening of four trenches and revealed no evidence of human activity on the site predating the 19th century. In the area of the site currently under the existing car park in the northern part of the site, where three trenches were dug, the sequence of layers was found to comprise modern tarmac and bedding material, a thin puddled silty clay deposit, a brown sandy gravel layer, overlying natural sandy Stanmore Gravel deposits, generally between 0.5m and 1m below existing ground level. In the area of the site adjacent to the existing building, one trench was dug in one of the areas where the footprint of the site was to be extended and found a sequence of modern tarmac and levelling material, above a brown subsoil over underlying yellow and grey banded clay. Several deeper features in this area were all found to contain fragments of modern material such as slates and porcelain. No finds or features apparently earlier than the 19th century were identified and no further archaeological work was recommended in connection with this development. [Au(abr)] |
