Abstract: |
The available archaeological, historical and cartographic evidence suggested that there was not a settlement at Southgate until the medieval period. Southgate was something of a backwater throughout most of the medieval period, being away from the main highways between London and the surrounding towns. The settlement grew slowly and even in the mid 19th century was still only a small settlement, with the area of the proposed site still undeveloped and used for agriculture. It was only from the late 19th century that development took place and the development remained virtually unchanged until the present time. [Au] |
