Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken as a planning condition for a proposed development. Archaeological evidence dating from the medieval and post-medieval periods had been identified within the site. No archaeological remains had previously been identified from the site but a possible medieval moat earthwork, possibly a ha-ha, had been recorded at Leverton Grange (19th century), close to the site. The site lay inland of a suggested Anglo-Saxon sea bank along the Highgate. In view of this, there was little or no potential for Saxon and medieval salt-making evidence at the site. A walkover survey was carried out at the site to assess ground conditions and the presence of archaeological remains. Indistinct earthworks, of uncertain origin, were present on part of the site area. Well-preserved earthworks of dylings, a type of fenland ridge and furrow, survived in the park land immediately northeast of the site. It was possible that the earthworks at the site were also the badly disturbed remains of dylings. No artefactual remains were observed during the walkover survey. [Au(abr)] |
