Abstract: |
A trial hole was excavated in the kitchen floor of the early 18th century main farmhouse range down to the intended depth for the introduction of a damp-proof membrane and make-up for a new floor. The results suggested that this room was traditionally earth floored - though if a suspended wooden floor had ever been introduced this would have left no trace detectable during these works. Excavations for a new solid floor surface and damp proof membrane for the early 19th century rear extension were monitored. The existing quarry tile surface was taken up together which revealed a well-worn brick floor surface. The bricks in this were bedded on sand, overlying a layer of c.250mm of mixed orange-buff clay with mortar, brick rubble, and sand, containing 19th century and earlier pottery and some iron slag/clinker. The presence of the latter supported the possibility that this wing was formerly used as a smithy. A sherd of Staffordshire slipware plate or bowl was found at the base of this layer. This was of probable late 17th-century date. Other pottery was mostly lead-glazed earthenware of 18th-19th century date. [Au(adp)] |
