Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken following the submission of a planning application for the construction of new houses. The SMR contained 11 sites located in the vicinity of the study area, including the findspots of two Neolithic axe heads, a possible late prehistoric cropmark site, a Bronze Age spearhead and a Roman road. There was no evidence for medieval or post-medieval activity in the study area, apart from agricultural use. The assessment area was part of the manor of John de Chapel, which in the medieval period was part for the priory of Carlisle. Following the Reformation, the land was granted to the dean and chapter of Carlisle Cathedral, St Mary's, in which parish the study area lay. The land appeared to have been partly enclosed within the post-medieval period, and the remainder was enclosed by an Act of Parliament in 1770. [Au(abr)] |
