Abstract: |
A geophysical survey and an archaeological investigation were undertaken as part of a research exercise by local volunteers to record the remains of a large enclosure revealed on aerial photographs that was being severely damaged by ploughing. Previous fieldwalking on the site had recorded Roman finds including Samian ware, black-burnished ware and a large spread of ceramic building material. The resistivity survey revealed a clear outline of the enclosure, confirming a shield-shaped enclosure along with the internal layout of the structure within it. There were three entrances and various interpretations of the internal use of space were offered. A subsequent test trench was excavated within the enclosure and revealed information about phases of wall construction. It also revealed more Roman finds, including pottery, and two brooches. One was a decorated bow brooch and one a less ornate bow brooch, but complete with clip and pin. However, most of these finds were not located within sealed contexts. [AIP] |
