Abstract:
An archaeological assessment review of a bypass which was due to be constructed around the western side of Alderley Edge was undertaken. Previous assessments had already been undertaken on the original and revised routes proposed; since 1998, three new route options had been proposed in close proximity to the route alignments already assessed. This review was a supplementary appraisal of the archaeological resource which would be affected by the route changes. Following assessment of several primary sources, it was shown that a number of the archaeological sites which had previously been highlighted as under threat from certain route options were now more directly exposed to damage by the most recent proposed route options; these included sites 12-18, and sites 30-31. Of the new route options proposed, the best combination appeared to be options 4K and 4G1, though the latter would have serious repercussions for a series of Listed Buildings, particularly Heawood Hall (site 17). For preference, road 4G1 should be redirected north of Bentley House, so as to avoid Heawood Hall entirely and to eliminate the possibility of cutting off the Hall from its lodge. In addition, both options would also impact on a number of medieval fishponds and other sites, which were considered to have low archaeological significance. [Au(abr)]
