Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposed residential development. There was evidence for multi-period prehistoric activity in the vicinity and a sizeable Iron Age settlement existed by about the end of the first century BC, at the crossing point of the River Soar where the Roman town of Leicester (Ratae) developed. Leicester became an important commercial centre towards the end of the first century AD, extending to over 40 ha in area and then became a considerable settlement during the Late Saxon period. There were no archaeological sites recorded within the development area and it was considered that the site had medium potential for remains, however, they could have been removed by modern development.
