Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that many findspots of prehistoric material had been recorded in the surrounding area. Artefacts found had included Neolithic flint scrapers and a possibly Late Neolithic flint axe. A small assembage of Roman pottery had been found to the south of the site, and a single Saxon artefact, a roundel, had been recovered in the immediate vicinity. A number of medieval enclosures and a bank, possibly woodland boundaries, had also been recorded nearby. It was concluded that the site had a moderate potential for prehistoric finds, but a low potential for prehistoric activity and occupation sites and for evidence relating to later periods. The survival of any archaeological deposits was likely to have been compromised by the construction of an existing house and garden terrace, and by trees in the eastern half of the site. It was recommended that an archaeological evaluation should be carried out. [AIP] |
