Abstract: |
The City of Hereford Archaeology Unit has an ongoing agreement with British Gas plc (West Midlands) to carry out any necessary archaeological watching briefs that may be required in Hereford whenever trenches are dug for new or replacement services. Most of these trenches are within the Hereford Area of Archaeological Importance (AAI) which was designated following the 1979 Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act. This Act places a statutory responsibility on such bodies as British Gas to provide information concerning forthcoming excavations for new services and, where necessary, allow the Investigating Authority for the AAI to examine the excavations and make any necessary records. Hereford Archaeology Series Report No 229 covers all the gas main watching brief work undertaken by CHAU during 1993 and 1994. In certain cases, the precise route of new mains was discussed beforehand, and on occasions a new route chosen, so as to minimise any potential disturbance to areas and features of archaeological importance.[AIP] |
