Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment identified that Mesolithic artefacts and a cairn, probably dating from the Bronze Age, had been recorded at Holcombe Moor. Several post-medieval farmsteads had occupied the site, some of which may have had medieval antecedents. Ridge and furrow had been observed, whilst features and earthworks relating to an early 19th century textile mill, Cinder Hill Factory, lay within the valley bottom. Numerous quarry scoops and a small-scale coal mine with associated building remains lay on the moor. It was concluded that the diversity of archaeological remains present was significant, and that additional research and consolidation works should be carried out in order to interpret and preserve the resource.
