Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a 1-3km wide corridor along the proposed route of a water pipeline was undertaken. Several foci of prehistoric activity were identified, as evidenced by ditched enclodures and ring ditch or barrow sites at Empingham, North Luffenham, Glaston, Bosbrooke, Lyddington and Caldecott. Two clusters of Romano-British archaeology had been recorded at Empingham and possibly Caldecott. Anglo-Saxon remains, particulary burials, had been found at Empingham and Bisbrooke, although settlement evidence was rare. Medieval settlements appeared to have been largely confined to existing villages; remains had mostly been identified where they had shrunk or shifted to one side. Deserted medieval village remains were present at Snelston (Caldecott) and Empingham (Mill Lane, outside the corridor). Moat and fishpond complexes had also been identified at Empingham, Lyddington and North Luffenham. Areas of surviving ridge and furrow were identified throughout the corridor, although none were known to be of especial interest. Important hedgerows could potentially have been present along parish boundaries which had been in place since enclosure, and were probably of earlier standing. Several pre-enclosed fields retained their hedgerows and were also of potential importance. [Au(abr)]
