Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks at a farm, which included the excavation of service trenches and a cess pit. The present 17th century farmhouse may have occupied the site of an earlier medieval manor. During the watching brief, a wall, a cobbled surface and a post-medieval stone culvert containing ceramic building material were recorded. The surface sealed a make-up layer which contained medieval, probably 13th century, pottery. A single worked flint flake was found. It was concluded that the absence of widespread medieval deposits probably reflected the site's long use as a farm. Repeated construction of yards and outbuildings had probably disturbed any remains which may have been present in this area of the site. [AIP] |
