Abstract: |
An excavation on land to the west of Buncefield Lane which was subject to proposed development of a new distribution centre followed an earlier evaluation. The excavation identified three phases of activity, although many features could not be phased due to lack of dating evidence. Small areas of late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age occupation were located towards the eastern half of the site and features from this phase included a hearth dump, a large ditch terminal, and a line of several postholes. Evidence of Roman occupation was confined to the western side of the site, although it was thought possible that some of the undated features may have been of Roman date. The Roman features contained pottery of mainly 1st-2nd century date and were interpreted as part of a field system contemporary with a known Roman temple less than 300 metres to the south of the site. Two post-medieval quarry pits were identified as representing the third and final phase of activity on the site. [Au(adp)] |
