Abstract: |
The investigations revealed the remains of a number of industrial buildings within the confines of the chalk pit. These included two lime kilns (one flare, one draw), an underground chamber, a pipeline, and pump house, two multi-period buildings containing kilns (possibly associated with charcoal burning for the gunpowder works) as well as six other buildings. Historical sources showed the site to have been used as a saltpetre and charcoal works for the gunpowder industry and later for the production of smokeless powder/guncotton, gas mantles and finally as a general purpose foundry.
