Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the determination of planning permission for the refurbishment, conservation and redevelopment of the site. As far as could be ascertained, the site had low potential for in situ Palaeolithic faunal remains, human activity of the prehistoric periods, or indeed the Roman, Saxon, medieval and early post-medieval periods. The site's archaeological potential for the post-medieval period (from c1600) was good in the non-basemented parts of the site, and non-existent in the basemented areas. The report recommended that any geotechnical ground investigations be observed archaeologically and a programme of test pitting (field evaluation) be undertaken prior to or directly after removal of the basement slab and prior to construction works.
