Abstract: |
A detailed magnetometer survey covering 21 hectares was carried out on land to the east of East Ardsley in advance of opencast coal extraction. The survey results indicate that the site had already been subject to a significant amount of disturbance as a consequence of previous coal extraction and the construction of the M1 motorway, confirming the conclusions of a previous assessment. Numerous linear trend anomalies have been identified across all parts of the site, the majority of which were indicative of recent agricultural activity. The remainder of the linear anomalies were also considered to have a modern origin although an archaeological origin cannot be completely discounted. No probable archaeological anomalies have been identified and the linear cropmarks were also not in evidence. On the basis of the magnetic survey the site was considered to have a low archaeological potential. [Au(abr)] |
