Abstract: |
Two trenches provided evidence for 16th and early 17th century occupation, which probably represented activity following the construction of the Henrician eastern defences of Hull up to the building of the extensive Citadel fortification in the 1680s. Sections of the north-east facing outer defences of the Citadel were also recorded. The outer rampart had been constructed using well-rammed clean clay, faced with turf, with a horizontal berm in the front, beyond which was the deep moat. The site provided important details of the construction and subsequent history of the north-eastern Citadel defences, confirming the results of other evaluations and excavations in the area.
