Abstract: |
The stocks at Oakham were replaced following conservation. Under the terms of Scheduled Monument Consent archaeological excavation of the post-holes was undertaken. The stumps of the posts were recovered and evidence revealed for the former presence of a horizontal beam that presumably tied the posts together below the ground surface. A layer of ironstone fragments was encountered in each post hole below the stumps, which may be the Marlston Rock Bed 'natural'. A fragment of Nottingham Ware of circa 1250-1300 from this layer may have provided a terminus post quem for the setting of the stocks in the present location. [Au] |
