Abstract: |
Five evaluation trenches were excavated at East Street, Tynemouth. The findings showed that in the areas that had been built on in the 19th and 20th centuries there was little chance of finding any of the hoped for medieval remains. However in those that had been relatively undisturbed, 23 well preserved post holes were seen, some retained their packing and one having a silver half cross penny of Richard I sitting on top of its fill. This was considered of great importance as in the context of medieval settlements in north-east England such remains were rare. [AIP] |
