An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the commencement of construction works on an extension to the Wooler Compressor site. Although located within a former river channel, the general area of the site was particularly attractive to early settlers and recent work had identified early prehistoric occupation close by; further, a linear cropmark ran through the location and, despite extensive disturbance associated with former construction works, partial survival of this feature was considered possible. Following on from a desk-based assessment, the field evaluation consisted of the excavation of four linear trial trenches. The results clearly showed that the area of the proposed extension was heavily disturbed and held little or no archaeological potential; similarly, no archaeologically significant deposits associated with the former river channel were noted.
