Abstract: |
Detailed survey, covering over 2ha, was conducted in five areas within the grounds of the former airfield. Aerial photographic evidence had indicated a complex of archaeological remains within the area of interest. Moreover, a number of ditch features had been exposed during groundworks at the site. Geophysical survey was undertaken within predetermined areas with the aim of locating any archaeological features related to the previously uncovered remains. This survey formed part of a wider archaeological evaluation being undertaken by Worcestershire Archaeological Service in advance of the construction of foot-and-mouth burial pits. A number of anomalies of archaeological interest were detected. These included two circular ditches, parts of several possible enclosures and indications of former field divisions. Survey also recorded areas of increased magnetic response and several faint trenches which may have had an archaeological explanation, although such an interpretation was tentative. The data also contained numerous ferrous responses and areas of magnetic disturbance. These were attributed to pipes/services, debris and other modern origins. [Au(abr)] |
