Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that no findspots of prehistoric material had been recorded in the vicinity. However, a Roman gold coin had been found in the area in the 19th century, and the south-western side of Edgware Road was thought to have followed the approximate alignment of Roman Watling Street. A Saxon settlement was thought to have lain at least 1km to the south of the site; no finds of this date had been recorded nearby. Documentary evidence existed for medieval tenements in the area, but the site itself was thought to have lain within open farmland in the medieval and early post-medieval periods. The site had remained as pasture land until the third decade of the 20th century, after which it had been developed for industrial manufacturing purposes. It was concluded that 20th century activity at the site suggested that it had no remaining archaeological potential, other than for remains of the Roman period along the Edgware Road frontage, in the forecourt area. It was recommended that geotechnical test-pits should be excavated in this area, and that the possibility of making up the new forecourt surface from existing ground level should be assessed, as this would remove the potential for archaeological impact.
