Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was carried out prior to development. The work revealed a large amount of disturbance in the northern part of the area, possibly due to the demolition of previous buildings. The natural subsoil varied greatly between fine sandy clay to the east and heavily waterlogged clay to the west. The generally wet nature of the western part of the site had made necessary the construction of several land drains which were revealed in the western trenches. Two open ponds were also evident in this part of the site. Elsewhere there was evidence for modern pitting and other disturbance and the eastern edge of the site appeared to have been stripped down to the natural in relatively recent times, a thin humic soil supporting the overgrowth representing the only cover. No remains of archaeological significance were recorded. [Au(abr)] |
