Abstract: |
Archaeological evaluation at the site was undertaken in response to a proposal for new building extensions. A late prehistoric hillfort, and then a medieval castle occupied the hilltop site, which was scheduled as an Ancient Monument. A campaign of excavations by Varley between 1939 and 1972 cast some light upon the nature of the archaeology, and more recent work by the RCHME, and a geophysical survey by West Yorkshire Archaeology Service. The recent evaluation comprised six trenches excavated within the hotel curtilage. These demonstrated that although the area had been heavily affected by modern utility services, there were buried soils beneath which features had been cut into the bedrock. Although the features were not dated, they may well have been of medieval or even late prehistoric origin. [Au(adp)] |
