Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of seven engineering test pits in the vicinity of the infirmary of the hospital founded in 1694, and the Davenport Buildings. This area had been used as an extension to the cemetery of St Alphege's Church during the early 18th century, and later exclusively as a burial ground for the hospital. The watching brief revealed evidence of human burials, particularly in the area of the extant tennis courts and a memorial erected in 1892 to the memory of the 20,000 naval pensioners buried in the burial ground of the hospital. The burials were within, or sealed by, a substantial layer of accumulated grave soil, containing post-medieval debris. [Au(adp)] |
