Abstract: |
Following the submission to Stratford-on-Avon District Council of an outline application for comprehensive redevelopment at South West Stratford, it was recommended - given the proximity of the proposed development to known archaeological remains - that an archaeological assessment be made of the area affected. The assessment, carried out by the Warwickshire Museum, revealed no evidence that any site of major archaeological importance would be disturbed by the development. Although there were sites from the Mesolithic period onwards recorded in the immediate vicinity, the only identifiable archaeological remains within the development area were the line of a Roman road to the north, fragmentary traces of medieval ridge and furrow field systems and remains of a late 19th century rifle range. It remained possible, however, that other unrecorded sites might be revealed if construction work were to proceed.[AIP] |
