Abstract: |
The survey aimed to investigate some of the anomalies identified by scanning during an earlier survey. Detailed gradiometer survey was carried out in six fields. This survey formed part of a wider archaeological assessment being undertaken by Terrence O'Rourke Plc. Numerous isolated pit and possible ditch-type anomalies and linear trends were noted. These may have been of archaeological interest, perhaps indicating the presence of plough damaged archaeological features, although the lack of any coherent form and a wider context made interpretation cautious. The clearest responses were located in Field 4. These comprised a ring ditch with a possible internal pit and a ditch, and corresponded with known crop marks. In Field 2 a possible plough damaged ring ditch was located, while in Field 3 a series of very weak rectilinear enclosures were noted. However, in both cases the responses were extremely weak and there was no supporting cropmark evidence; as such an archaeological interpretation was cautious. Numerous responses at soil noise level could have been of archaeological interest but they were at the limits of detection and could not be defined with any confidence. [Au(abr)] |
