Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation comprising 19 trial trenches and totalling 1508 sq. m was undertaken on a proposed opencast extraction site. This work was based on the results of a previous desk-based assessment and geophysical survey of the proposed site. A small number of truncated ditches were identified in the northern area of the evaluation (geophysical block 4). None could be related to features shown on any of the known cartographic sources for the Blagdon Estate. Some or all may have dated from undocumented activities associated with the parkland of the 18th to early 20th centuries. However, some or all may have predated the establishment of the park, representing a possibly earlier system of land divisions. Excavated evidence suggested that the proposed mound was constructed as a viewing platform, probably in the 18th century. No evidence was found to suggest that the mound had a previous function, for example as a burial mound. Analysis of the buried soil surviving beneath the mound suggested that the ground was under arable cultivation at the time the mound was constructed. The presence of back-filled coal mining activity was identified within the central area of the evaluation (geophysical block 2). The remains of ploughed-out ridge and furrow cultivation were also identified within a number of trenches in the central area of the evaluation. They corresponded with earthwork remains visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s to 1970s. From the aerial photographic evidence, it appeared that the mining activitry here predated the ridge and furrow remains, suggesting a possible medieval or early post-medieval date. Evaluation within the southern area of the site (geophysical block 1) produced an isolated gully, probably associated with past mining activitry. In addition, backfilled opencast workings were identified in one trench, corresponding to an area of post-war mining visible on aerial photographs. [Au(abr)]
