Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed development of 15 new houses. The study site was thought to have a very low archaeological potential for the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods, residual struck flints could however be present. It was unlikely that intact palaeo landsurfaces of this period would be present. The archaeological potential of the site for the Neolithic and Bronze Age was thought to be low. Small quantities of residual flint as recovered at Victoria Way, Charlton may be present. The archaeological potential for the Iron Age and Roman period could probably be defined as low to moderate. The site was some distance south of a projected Roman road alignment. The archaeological potential of the site for the Anglo-Saxon, medieval and post-medieval periods was thought to be very low. The study site lay in agricultural or horticultural land until the end of the 19th century. The cumulative effect of past post-depositional impacts caused by land use and development could be defined as likely to have been severe and widespread. As a consequence it was considered very unlikely that significant in situ archaeological deposits would be present on the site. [Au(adp)]
