Abstract: |
A survey of a house which probably dated from the mid to late 16th century was carried out whilst it was stripped out for repairs and alterations. It was originally a townhouse of timber-framed and stone construction comprising a five-bay range on an axis parallel with the street, with an axial gabled roof. The plan may have originally comprised a single-bay room to the west, a two-bay single-storey vestigial hall in the centre and a two-bay parlour to the east, although this suggested plan may have related to a secondary phase. A large stone chimney-stack was inserted in the mid-17th century. In the 18th century, the front wall was rebuilt in stone rubble and the house was sub-divided to form two cottages. An outbuilding and two outshuts, the latter adjoining the rear wall of the house, were also constructed in the 18th century. In the 19th century, a single-storeyed brick wing was added and the eastern cottage was partially converted for use as a shop. [Au(abr)] |
