Abstract: |
The National Trust commissioned a scheme of archaeological works in connection with the repair of the moat banks. A watching brief and excavation took place. The watching brief failed to find anything of interest. During the excavation significant stratigraphy was located and finds of a late medieval date were recovered. The excavation provided evidence that the bridge abutment was built first, then the banks piled up against it. This had implications for the understanding of the sequence of the construction of the castle and its moat. [Au] |
