Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site which lay 250m to the south-west of Lancaster Castle was undertaken. The castle was a medieval foundation, located over the remains of a series of Roman forts. The assessment found that buildings at the proposal site appeared to date from the mid-19th century, when the plot was first developed. Despite its proximity to the castle and Roman forts, sites and artefacts recorded in the surrounding area indicated that the proposal area probably lay outside the bounds of both the Roman and medieval settlements. The discovery of Roman burials nearby reinforced the suggestion that the site lay beyond the Roman settlement. It was noted that some disturbance to the site had been caused by underground petrol tanks and services. A limited programme of evaluation trenching was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
