Abstract: |
It was apparent from an earlier desk-based study that there was a high potential for prehistoric activity on the site located on the banks of the tributary of the River Wey. The site was surrounded by 'Areas of High Archaeological Potential' listed in the Waverley Constraints map as defined in the Surrey Structure Plan. Previous activities on the site, which included a quarry pit, industrial buildings and the remediation of contaminated soil prior to the construction of the present car park, were likely to have had a serious impact on archaeological survival. The field evaluation found that natural deposits had been truncated to a uniform level across the site, probably during the construction of the existing Sainsbury superstore. No archaeological deposits or features were identified. [Au(abr)] |
