Abstract:
Excavations were carried out at 50-54 High Street, Guildford prior to the seeking of planning permission for re-development of the site. A late 12th century stone-built chamber of national importance was discovered under the shop and behind the cellar. Beyond this, on the ground floor, was a raised area at the rear of the shop. Two investigations into the area did not explain the rise in level, as had been hoped. An investigation into the front of the raised area did not uncover any relationship between this area and the 12th century chamber, as was hoped, but did establish the nature of the party wall between 48 and 50 High Street. Holes dug in the corridor leading to No. 52 (offices above 50-54) revealed the chalk wall which formed the party wall between the cellars of 50 and 54. Trial holes in the yard showed that the area was very disturbed, with a mixture of recent drains and medieval rubbish pits. The cellar below the Quarry Street entrance was investigated and recorded but no excavation was done. [Au]
