Abstract:
The survey corridor followed the proposed route of a water pipe that ran from Polgear Farm to a point approximately 160m west-north-west of the triangulation pillar on Carnmenellis. Geophysical survey was undertaken with the aim of locating detectable remains of archaeological potential along the survey corridor. This work formed part of a wider archaeological evaluation being undertaken by Cornwall Archaeological Unit. The background magnetic response was found to be quiet, which favoured gradiometer scanning. A single linear anomaly of unambiguous interest was located, as was a diffuse area of increased 'noise'. These were targeted by detailed survey, as was an apparently archaeologically 'blank' field close to Lower Polgear Farm. It was not possible to survey the southernmost extent of the corridor within the open fell because of the unfavourable groundcover. Detailed survey was conducted in four areas within three fields. A single linear anomaly was recorded which may have been archaeological in origin, perhaps a former field boundary. However, this remained tentative and there was the possibility that it may have reflected a modern cause, such as a drain. The data also contained several trends, whose nature and origin could not be determined, and numerous ferrous responses. [Au(abr)]
