Abstract: |
The excavation uncovered evidence for medieval domestic occupation and structures lying adjacent to a mill stream. A number of large linear features, one of which produced a waterlogged fragment from a mill wheel, were interpreted either as elements of a water management system associated with a medieval mill or as boundary or drainage ditches. Documentary evidence indicated that in 1299 Poyle Manor comprised a house, a mill and 122 acres. It had previously been assumed that the mill was located on the site of the known post-medieval mill in Poyle village, but the excavation results suggested that the medieval precursor to this structure was in fact located on the site of the manor house, to the west of the village.
