Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken to investigate two sets of earthworks to south of the present route of the A303 and located along one of the proposed routes for A303 upgrade. Three trenches were excavated: one adjacent to the Scheduled Ancient Monument known as North Kite and two across the linear earthworks systems on Wilsford Down. The work demonstrated that all three survived as sub-surface features cut into the underlying chalk, with large amounts of flint working debris, and some tools, in the immediate vicinity. Detailed analysis of the flint indicated that much of it was in situ, as originally knapped, having survived below the ploughzone. [Au(abr)] |
